Our research group at the EBHA conference in Lisbon

The annual conference of the European Business History Association (EBHA) was held in Lisbon from 11 to 13 July 2024. Celebrating 30 years of EBHA, the anniversary event was hosted by two business schools, ISEG and Nova SBE. The event, which attracted hundreds of researchers from the European countries, North and South America, China, South Korea and Japan, was also attended by Hungarian researchers, the ELTE BTK Business History Research Group represented the largest contingent from the Central European region.

Among our colleagues, Ádám Balogh spoke about the lessons of the 1893–1894 Brazilian naval rebellion concerning the business history of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Gábor Koloh about the spatial aspects of the history of the Hangya Cooperatives operating in Hungary in the interwar period, Judit Klement about the corporate patronage of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in the 19–20th century, Ágnes Pogány about the collapse of the Victoria Steam Mill in 1926 and the Hungarian General Credit Bank in 1931 and their consolidation attempts in an international context, Márton Simonkay about  the history of the Federation of Hungarian Industrialists in a Central European regional comparison.

The Hungarian contingent was also strengthened by our honorary member: Mária Hidvégi gave two lectures: first on the development of big business in Central Europe in the 1920s, and then on the corporate strategy of Ganz and Tungsram in the 1930s, responding to the economic nationalism of the era. Gyula Horváth, a doctoral student of the ELTE TDI's Doctoral Programme in Social and Economic History, analysed the history of Hungarian insurance companies in Hungary between 1946 and 1952, which came into Soviet ownership as a part of the war reparations. In addition, Mária Hidvégi and Ágnes Pogány were also invited by the EBHA to contribute as chairs and discussants to the conference sessions.

The three-day meeting included the EBHA General Assembly, the presentation of the EBHA Dissertation Prize and many valuable professional discussions. From the Hungarian point of view, the conference was an important milestone in the three-year work of our research group, which also showed that the topics researched by our colleagues are closely connected to international issues.
